Preparation is the key to success. Likewise, even before bariatric surgery, we like to prepare our patients well. Preparation includes- pre-surgery tests, correction of nutritional deficiencies, spirometry for improving lung function, pre-surgery diet and the required specialist consultations.
Pre-surgery diet is predominantly high protein liquid diet. Its purpose is mainly to reduce the swelling on the liver. This makes the surgery easier or the surgeon and safer for the patient. It also helps to reduce some amount of weight and helps the surgeon to assess patient compliance. Pre surgery diet must be done under the supervision of a qualified bariatric nutritionist as different patients have different requirements. It is also important to take into account if the patient has diabetes or any other liver or kidney related issues.
Pre-surgery diet also helps patients to get adjusted to liquid intake as after the surgery for 15 days they have to be on liquids.
