Gall bladder stones are a very common ailment. Most of the times when patients come for a consultation with me, they want to know if they are the right candidate for surgery.
There are generally two types of patients:
- Those who have gall bladder stones but do not have any symptoms related to that.
- Those who have gall stones that are causing symptoms.
The thing to understand here is that gall stones usually do not go away on their own or even with medications. Many a times patients are misled into alternative therapies where it is claimed that gall stones will be melted with some kind of medications. I must tell you, that once your gall bladder has started forming stones, it will continue to do so. Complications arising out of these gall stones are far more serious and sometimes can even lead to a lot of morbidity and mortality.
If you have asymptomatic gall stones, you can wait for some time before you get the surgery done. However, there is no guarantee that these asymptomatic stones will not lead to any complications in the near future.
Gall stones that are causing symptoms like pain, fever, jaundice, pancreatitis etc must be taken up for surgery as soon as possible after doing the required work up.
Some doctors also recommend waiting if you have a single stone that is not causing any symptoms. Well, again, this stone can get stuck at the neck of the gall bladder at any time and lead to mucocoele or pyocoele of the gall bladder. It can also lead to acute infection called- Acute cholecystitis. In these situations, also it is advisable to get the surgery at the earliest.

Myths and fear of surgery sometimes lead to delay in treatment and may give rise to complications that could have been avoided.
