The decision to undergo bariatric surgery is a major decision. We take almost an hour for every consultation prior to bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery is a life changing surgery and it is very important to know what to expect after the surgery. Patients who are counselled well before the surgery, cope up in a much better way after the surgery. Some of the common side effects after bariatric surgery are listed as under. This post does not cover surgical complications. Those will be covered in another post.

• Nausea
• Vomiting- especially on eating too fast or too much.
• Choking sensation- especially on eating too fast or too much.
• Food intolerances
• Hairfall- this happens more from the third to the eighth month or so and then tends to be self-limiting.
• Nutritional deficiencies- usually happen if the supplements are not taken regularly. It is important to follow up regularly and to conduct all blood reports at regular intervals.
• Skin sagging- depends on the age and weight of the patient. Patients who exercise regularly tone up better than those who don’t
• Dumping syndrome- occurs after consuming sugary or high calorie foods.
• Constipation- It is important to consume enough water and fibre in the diet to avoid constipation.
• Diarrhoea- This may happen after certain bypass procedures. It is usually self limiting.
