A very famous obesity specialist and researcher called DuBois wrote that- “We don’t yet know why some individuals grow fat”, or it may be more accurate to say that we do not know why all the individuals in this over-nourished community do not grow fat”. Obesity is a very complex disease. It is a folly to think that it is only a result of high caloric intake and low energy expenditure. Obesity is multifactorial with strong genetic and neuro-hormonal origins. As a first step we need to stop blaming people for suffering from obesity. It is a serious disease just like any other disease. Obesity is also the root cause for many other associated co-morbid diseases like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol issues, heart disease, joint pains, obstructive sleep apnoea, gout, liver disease, lung disease, venous thrombo-embolism, PCOS, infertility and so on.
Thus, it is very important to seek treatment for obesity. Bariatric surgery in India is an effective treatment option for grade 2 and grade 3 obesity. Please see the video for more information.
