This is one of the most common questions asked during bariatric surgery consultations. Most patients are extremely worried about regaining weight after bariatric surgery. Obesity is a chronic progressive disease and bariatric surgery is the only method by which a person can lose massive amount of weight and maintain it for a long period of time. However, the nature of disease is such that it that the weight eventually tends to bounce back. This is a slow process and if checked in time, can be stalled. We usually advice all our patients to be very regular with their follow up schedules. We also tell them to raise a red flag if their weight goes up more than 5 kgs of the lowest weight achieved. That is when we start escalating our efforts in the form of introducing different kinds of weight loss diets, exercise regimes and sometimes pharmacotherapy. These therapies work. They need to be started on time and they need to be taken regularly. Obesity is a chronic disease and we understand that as a bariatric team, we have a life-long commitment with you. So do not worry, together we can work at keeping the weight at bay.
