Intra-gastric balloon insertion is a non-surgical weight loss procedure which is performed endoscopically. A silicon balloon is inserted into the stomach through the mouth and inflated with fluid. This inflated balloon occupies space inside the stomach and restricts the amount of food that a person can consume. The main mechanism for weight loss is restriction of food intake. The balloon has to be removed either at the end of 6 months or 1 year depending on its make. There are mainly two types of balloons. One is the non-adjustable balloon that can be kept in the stomach for 6 months and the other is the adjustable balloon that can be kept inside for a period of 1 year. The most common side effect of balloon insertion is severe nausea and vomiting in the first two weeks. It can lead to increased acidity and acid reflux later on and in rare cases may lead to ulceration or perforation of the stomach wall. In general, it is a safe procedure and is a good option for patients who are overweight or suffer from grade 1 obesity.
