Laparoscopic Roux en y gastric bypass surgery is one of the most commonly performed bariatric operations across the world. It is known as the gold-standard bariatric surgery operation and has one of the best results in terms of weight loss as well as improvement of co-morbidities like type 2 diabetes. In this operation a small 30 to 50 c stomach pouch is created using surgical staplers. A small intestinal loop is then attached to this gastric pouch in a Y shaped fashion. A Roux en y gastric bypass leads to restriction of food intake, malabsorption of calories and nutrients, early satiety, decreased hunger, neurohormonal changes, bile acid interactions and changes in gut flora. It usually leads to an excess weight loss of about 65 to 75 %. Additionally, it also leads to significant improvement in associated comorbidities, especially type 2 diabetes. As it is a diversionary procedure, it is essential to take nutritional supplements for life after Roux en y gastric bypass. It is also important to follow a healthy diet and lifestyle after Roux en y gastric bypass surgery.
