Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a very popular bariatric operation. It is currently the most common bariatric surgery being performed in India. In this surgery the stomach is divided vertically using surgical staplers and the outer two thirds is removed. This leaves behind a tubular, banana shaped stomach with a capacity of 60 to 80 cc. This helps to reduce the intake of food, increase satiety, reduces hunger and increases the speed of food to pass down into the small intestine from the stomach. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy leads to a weight loss of about 60 to 70% of the excess weight over a period of 1 year. It also leads to a significant improvement in associated diseases. In the long term, it can lead to gastro-esophageal reflux in some patients. This can usually be treated with help of medications and in severe cases may require conversion to a Roux en y gastric bypass. As with all bariatric surgeries, it is imperative to follow a healthy diet and lifestyle after Laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery.
