Bariatric surgery is a lifechanging surgery. It reduces the size of the stomach, in some surgeries the intestines are bypassed, produces hormonal changes and induces many psychological changes as well. During our consultations we always inform the patients about what to expect after the surgery. We believe that patients fare much better when they are well prepared. The first 3 to 6 months after bariatric surgery is a period of active adjustment. There are a lot of dietary changes. Patients may experience some degree of nausea and choking sensation. At times if too much food is consumed or eaten too fast them there may be vomiting. There may be some food intolerances and sometimes even water intolerance in the initial phase. Constipation and sometimes diarrhoea is common. Hairfall is common in the first year after bariatric surgery. It is usually self-limiting and settles down later. Patients may also experience some degree of weakness in the first month or so. However, all these issues are temporary and usually settle down. It is important to follow the dietary advice of your bariatric team and take your nutritional supplements regularly. It is also important to get your investigations done and follow up at regular intervals as advised by the bariatric surgery team.
