Although approximately 32% of the Indian population is obese, not all of them receive bariatric surgery (weight loss). Sadly, only about 1% of those qualified for the surgery receive it.
As per the Indian guidelines, to be considered for bariatric surgery, you must have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or greater. People with a BMI of 30 – 35 and a weight-related illness, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or fatty liver disease, may also be eligible. Some diabetics may qualify with a BMI >27.5 if losing weight will help them control their condition.
We work with you at Dr. Aparna’s Laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery Centre, Mumbai, to determine which type of bariatric surgery is the safest and most suitable for you. Here’s what you’ll think about.
Procedures of bariatric surgery:
Five bariatric surgery types are considered standard bariatric operations, but three are the most prevalent. All are done with minimally invasive techniques, which means tiny incisions and quick recoveries. In general, there are three major types:
- Sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve)
This surgery entails the removal of two-thirds of the outer stomach. leaving you with a smaller “sleeve” to contain food. You’ll feel fuller quicker and consume less food.
It also has additional hormonal mechanisms and helps to decrease appetite. - Bypass procedure for the stomach
The GI system is rerouted during Roux-en-Y gastric bariatric surgery. A small stomach pouch is created using staplers and the small intestine is attached to the gastric pouch. This leads to bypassing of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. A gastric bypass leads to weight loss by decreasing food intake, increasing satiety, decreasing hunger, and hormonal changes. - The duodenum switch
Many elements of gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery are combined in duodenal switch surgery. To make the “sleeve,” your surgeon removes a portion of your stomach and then conducts a more extensive version of gastric bypass. This surgery is highly malabsorptive with a potential for nutritional deficiencies and is not very commonly practiced in India.
Is bariatric surgery right for you? Consider the following factors:
- If your BMI is more than 35 then you can consider bariatric surgery.
- If your BMI is between 30 and 35 with two co-morbidities like diabetes or blood pressure, then surgery may be considered.
- If the BMI is between 27.5 and 30 but a person has uncontrolled diabetes although optimum medical management, bariatric/metabolic surgery can be considered.
