What is the complication rate after gall bladder surgery/ Laparoscopic cholecystectomy?
Gall bladder surgery or laparoscopic cholecystectomy is relatively safe. However, like every other surgery, it carries a small risk of complications that are listed below:
- Bile leak- This is one of the most feared complications after gall bladder surgery. An injury to the bile duct may sometimes lead to bile leak. If this were to happen you may need to undergo a re-laparoscopy or an ERCP as per your clinical condition and the doctor’s advice. However, do note that with increasing experience in laparoscopic techniques, the chances of bile leak happening are quite low.
- Bleeding- This a rare complication of gall bladder surgery.
- Anesthesia related complications
- Injuries to other organs during surgery
- Lung related complications- pneumonia, atelectasis
- Pancreatitis due to slippage of stones during surgery
- Wound infection
- Others
